Tanis Gray picked up her first pair of needles at the age of 9 after watching both of her Grandmothers work magic with their crochet hooks and her mom with knitting needles. "It's in my blood," she simply states.
Quickly growing tired of making scarves, hats and mittens from other people's patterns, Tanis tackled her first sweater and started creating patterns of her own in both knit and crochet. Each February school vacation was spent at the local Yarn Shop gathering skills and yarn for new projects.
Tanis is the former Yarn Editor for Soho Publishing, home to Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, Knit.1, Debbie Bliss and Sixth & Spring Books, and is the co-editor of Knit.1.
Tanis has studied under Shirley Paden and has collaborated with world-renowned designer Nicky Epstein. Her work has been featured in many knitting books, as well as Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, Knit.1, Adorn, Cutting Edge, A.C. Moore and Martha Stewart Living magazines. She has also done patterns for Be Sweet, Artyarns and Alchemy Yarns of Transformation.
Tanis received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film, Animation and Video from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). After graduating with Honors, she went to New York and worked for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, HBO, Focus Features, MTV and Hungry Man Productions, prior to joining the Soho Publishing team.
Tanis enjoys volunteering and regularly teaches knitting classes at a women's shelter and led her knit group in the production of Snuggles for local animal shelters.
She currently resides in Washington DC with her husband, Roger, pug, Mercury and cat, Igby teaching knitting workshops and designing for major yarn companies. |
